The Model Workshop

The Model Workshop

I've had the most A-MAAAAzing opportunity to attend this year's Ethnicity Model Management's Model Academy in New York City. There, I've learned so much pertaining to the do's and don'ts of the fashion and entertainment industries. This weekend consisted of guest celebrity speakers, mock auditions, a consultation, and a photoshoot. I must say, from what I've learned, I'm ready to tackle any and EVERYthing lol. I have to say a warm thanks to LaShawnna Stanley and the Ethnicity Talent family.

Day 1:

Melyssa Ford

Melyssa Ford is originally from Toronto, Canada and came to New York with a dollar and a dream. Well, not quite, it was actually a suitcase and $25. Now that's faith. You may have noticed her in calendars, hosting television shows, acting in film, as well as some of the biggest hip-hop videos of all time. Currently, Melyssa is a motivational speaker and is working on launching her non-profit organization, promoting literacy.

I have to say, it was a pleasure meeting her. Not only is she a model, but an entrepreneur. Melyssa's message was simple, it is "important to be flexible and cultivate your talent...pay the craft respect." Do your own research! You cannot possibly excel in the profession of choice, if you do not study the nature of the business.

Reading is a tool that will broaden your sense of knowledge and direct you. I remember my elementary school's motto in Queens, "Education is the key, which unlocks the door, to guide us through life, forever more..." Education, not only meaning proper schooling in an acclaimed edifice (which is great), but you have to take part in educating yourself in LIFE. Many of us miss out on opportunities due to the lack of research. Melyssa said it best, be as a chameleon and "stick to your goals without sacrificing your values or goals." It is also important to trust your intuition. -- Something I'm personally learning to do more.

Ladies and gentlemen, lastly (but not least), confidence is key to anything you decide to do!

Self-Esteem is usually looked over but LaShawnna Stanley and Melyssa Ford made sure to accentuate this fact. However you feel on the inside is bound to show on the outside. We, as human beings, tend to be our biggest obstacle. You better grab Destiny by the ears and ride it like it's your last breath! Don't look back and #keepgoing.

DAY 2:

Sasha Sydnor/ Liris Crosse

Day 2 of the workshop was just as good as the first. We had 2 guest speakers, Runway Model Sasha Sydnor and Model Liris Crosse. During this time, we also had mock auditions. Lashawnna broke us, the model-students, into teams to perform actual audition scripts for BET's "The Game" and a Luster's Pink Original Lotion commercial. Being the character that I am, you know I had fun! lol. During that particular day, I knew that I really, genuinely enjoyed acting and performing. Look out because you will be seeing more of me!

Sasha Sydnor came into the vicinity with such a graceful presence. The first thing I noticed, was her confidence in herself. Sasha is nearly a 6 feet tall runway fashion model, hailing from Florida. She spoke about finding your inner you, your "inner God" and letting it shine. As a performer, whether it be a model, singer, dancer, or whatever you desire to do... you have to own it and trust yourself. Sasha explained that she didn't always have the fabulous runway walk that she owns now, but it took weeks and weeks of tenacious practice. If you do not believe in yourself, how are you going to convince other people to believe in you? Sasha than took the pleasure of correcting each of the student-models' walks. We all will now leave with a sense of what to do on the runway as well as how to come to an audition with confidence and professionalism.

Liris Crosse was the third speaker and she, like Melyssa, has graced many magazines, movies, hosted public events, and is also a motivational speaker.

Liris' story is about a young woman who has had countless doors slammed in her face because of her voluptuous curves. Liris took it upon herself to research and market herself. This meant, waking up early in the morning and sending out numerous emails, visiting agency after agency and traveling from city to city. She was and still is a go-getter putting a one hundred and ten per cent into her career. Liris simply states, "I never gave up..." A small yet bold statement that encompasses the work that she's done. Liris is another example of building her own lane, when the lanes previously laid out did not fit her. Don't take NO as your final answer. Grab hold of your DESTINY!

DAY 3:

This was the final day to impress the judges and apply what you've learned to your final product... your photos. To me, this was a dream come true... to shoot in midtown, Manhattan. I had a wonderful time, especially with the help of Samantha, one of the members of Ethnicity Talent, coaching the model-students along the way. I had an awesome team of make-up artists who "beautified" me and an awesome photographer to shoot me! Every girls dream right?! lol. Well, it's not as easy as it looks. With the right light, location, and pose, you have the ultimate masterpiece.

During my experience, I've come to the conclusion that it was by the grace of God that I was able to meet such wonderful people. From the models to the staff to the students, I've learned a little more about myself, as well as others. I hope this is the beginning of life-long positive relationships that I had previously prayed for. I hope you have enjoyed reading this entry as much as I've enjoyed writing it and I hope you enjoy the photos!

Truth. The anecdote to what is false.
Many argue, it's back up by facts and/or a reliable source.
But what if it's based on faith, may not make sense at all.
No scientific explanation, doesn't necessarily mean it's false.
Truth. Within or without. Content in silence or proclaim it out loud.
Truth. A somewhat logical consistency--or a surprisingly believed farce.
A truth because of massive acceptance or unfortunate misconception.
A viable belief. A separation of a people causing permanent distinction.
Some are free to practice their truths, some locked away or abused.
Some exhilarated and in freedom, other in bondage because of truth.
A remedy to falsity.
A balance from falsehoods to its facts.
Without truth, clarity lacks.
But my truth isn't the same for Pat.
Fingers point left, right, front and back.
Calling out impostors names--blaming, "Who you calling Rat!"
A perpetual cycle, grab a hold truth with a tightened strap.

Yes! Struggles, discomfort, fears--they're seasonings of a Queen so true.

As I call out to the mighty one, it seems as if I exist alone,

So much passion and energy, an eruption on Dante's Peak about to explode I'm on overheat.
Casting a shadow over my enemies, bad luck is your fortune your cuts made me bleed...
But I'm not dead Im just finally..Im stronger now from the ground look up I continue to suceed.
Many didn't but I just had to believe...It's either up or down my definition of success I hold the key.
Is it fast cars, a big house, forever fresh and clean
Or is it pay the debt of my family Do I take up the cross for my homies on the streets
Make sure my nieces want for nothing, prepare for my unborn seeds.
Some say Im over my head thinking up to big a dream
Failure, my biggest fear I need a strong team.
We stick together "Death before Disloyalty"
but it's hard to find true ones in double the amount of phonies
To me no purpose in life is like a catastrophe
What you do on this Earth who you help before you leave
I pray to God I can give back somehow to my community, but its hard to smile with
frowns tryna block me. So I can't see.
Its a rough job but Destiny chose me, I already know I bear the cross of the unseen.
I feel broken hears so they can be pain free.
Maybe I should have a drink to numb the blows I would receive.
No matter how many curses or spells you try to throw on me, it will fall back to you twice as bad backfire on your scheme!

I'm not Christ no where close I am unclean but I know through his blood, he covers me
I should have been dead long time but just like a light beam...
He shed his light so bright don't know why he saved me.
So success in my stars that's my Destiny. Struggles and pain, they're not there to finish me
I've got a heart of steel and my vision's clear I am not yet out of steam
The pressure never dies and I yearn sleep from anxiety
My pulse forever rising my heart still ticking, no time to prop my feet
So I can't let the next one claim my seat,
Take everything, my future... this will not be my defeat

International Hair Show in Secaucus, NJ (spokes-model)

Last month in May, I had the wonderful opportunity of representing Shake N Go Hair as a Spokes-model. I advertised the new Cuticle Remy XQ hair weave, which is an upgrade for the SAGA Remy Hair weave. It was truly an exhilarating experience where I've met so many wonderful people. Everyone, whether they had similar goals to my own or have achieved many other things, had become an inspiration to me. Not to mention, this was my first gig as "spokes-model." Danielle, my hairstylist, did an awesome job putting in that full-head weave with my natural hair only being 3/4 of an inch! lol. I had also met another wonderful person Naja Matthews, who I've learned so much from! Amazing.

A few guest appearances were made by the cast of Jerseylicious (style network) and also Derek J (Housewives of ATL). Let me tell you... Derek is Fabulous!

FRESH MONEY BIO
Born and raised in the Bronx, New York the home of hip-hop Fresh Money always knew as a child he wanted to be a great M.C.

Influenced by artist such as Krs-One, Big Daddy Kane, Wu-tang Clan, Jay -Z, and the Notorious B.I.G, just to name a few he knew that he wanted to follow in their footsteps and make good music.
It wasn’t until the summer of 99 when him and two childhood friends had the chance to meet with Violator Management CEO Chris Lighty though he was highly impressed Lighty felt that Fresh and his friends needed to write more so with that being said Fresh wrote rhymes consistently seeing that he was so close he knew he couldn’t fall back now.

Later that year Fresh and his two childhood friends B-Train and Belvy started recording numerous songs together Belvy who is also the CEO of TRE entertainment personally handpicked Fresh and Train to join the team and be part of the biggest movement in the Bronx they continued to record with plans of dropping a mixtape unfortunately Fresh moved to Virginia and the mixtape was put on hold .

Upon his return to the Bronx in 2002 Fresh hooked up with another childhood friend P. Pretty aka Dow Jones and they decided to start a label together Gotham City Records working and writing with different artist and eventually putting out there own mixtape titled a Bronx Tale Based On A True Story.
In 2006 he continued to stay on his grind and gain recognition with his music linking up with 16’s Ent and featuring on several songs with several artist on the label.

In 2007 Fresh Money dropped his debut mixtape titled In Money We Trust to good reviews both on the internet and in the streets. Now fast forward to 2010 and Fresh Money is set to drop his debut EP titled The Addiction. Be sure to keep an eye on this MC as he continues to make a name for himself as one of the hottest M.C. to rep VA.

Random: 'Thoughts on my Life at the Moment...'

So after having a conversation with first myself, my cousin, and God, I've realized that if you want change you have to first have the desire... then second act upon it.

Life can be scary at times, in fact all the time, but you only have one to live. I have to be honest the past three years has been hell for me and I expect there to be many more trials before my rainbow appears. A lot of my trials had been sowed by previous bad decisions, as well as forces in which I had no control over.

Then again that's the story of life... a circle of joy and pain. A lesson each and every one of us must learn. The past three years has been a continuous test of my faith as well as a test of my livelihood. All these years I've been trying to please certain people, believing I've owed them damn near my life...only to find myself in ultimate confusion. No matter what I've accomplished, it was never quite enough. My friends, you must first seek God and do what is true to you, or else you will never find true happiness.

I have beaten myself up over these nuances but then realized I am only human. You can try to control everything in your life only to find yourself completely losing control. I thank God for literally saving me and giving me the little bit of hope I hang on to till' this day.

Like many others, I have been told I can't do it, I'm just a little person with big dreams, I've wasted my life, I'm not good enough, etc. If all these are true, why do I have this burning desire of the complete opposite? Why is it that complete strangers can see my vision without me saying, but the people I love or look to... try to destroy my confidence? I refuse to be angry with them because of my love.

I know I'll prove otherwise one day, but I realize now the devil is a liar. God put me here for a reason, and these hard times are allowed to unfold only to season me for my true purpose. My path is only for me whether I decide to go left or right, but my outcome will only be success. I've decided that and unlike before, anyone wishing me other than that, I will rebuke.

So as I ponder at split road on whether I should go left or right, I have more confidence now than I've had yesterday. My only apology is to the ones I've let down because I'm not who they wanted me to be but I have no regrets because I am who I'm supposed to be. I become wiser by the day and through the pain and loneliness I push through. I push through for me, for those like me, and for my future little ones who will need for me to just be. I am very grateful for all of my blessings but I refuse to carry the weight of another's regret and disapprovels....until next time.

All I need is a track to mirror what I'm feeling

No need to re-enact the past cuz the present is what saved me.

I can't help the remnants of the past --

memories still haunt me.

I used to like fading to black,

mix that henny that jack... don't judge me.

I ain't even made it yet,

Yet it's hard to trust those surrounding me.

I can't imagine blowing up and have the posers try to love me.

It's sad when the haters, the snakes, they're close like family.

It' hurts when they, like snakes, are in your own family...

How can you tell the difference when love for fam runs so deep...

Damn, I can't help but I hold them close to me..

Try to show nothing but love, like what's the reasoning?

I guess that's why our bills say "In God We Trust," our world revolves around it.

Maybe that's why I, like many others, have love for money....

So Spring is coming to a close and Summer is pretty much here. Oh the love and the romance is definitely in the air?

What is better than to start the season off with a flick appealing to the young and old, men and women and especially sports fans. This "Cinderella-like," light-hearted film, pokes fun at the stereotypes surrounded by star athletes, pampered dimes and hard-working women-friends. Who said love was perfect?

Scott McKnight (Common), a NJ Nets star, runs into Leslie Wright (Queen Latifah), ironically at a gas station in NYC and invites her to his birthday party. There, Leslie's gold-digging God-sister/ friend, Morgan (Paula Patton), bags Scott and becomes engaged until - of course- Scott has a crippling accident on the court, placing his NBA career in a questionable state. Leslie is hired as his personal rehabilitation trainer and you can pretty much guess the rest.

Queen Latifah's radiance and glow graces the screen while a snippet of Common's obvious musical talent woos the audience. I must say their love scene was surprising and comical, considering their characters are not a likely match in a "perfect" world. Whoops! did I just let the cat out the bag? lol. I must say, Paula Patton's character, Morgan played the role of the stunning gold-digger quite well, though the script seems to make her character innocent and gives it a slight slap on the wrist.

Pam Grier plays as Leslie’s mother and Phyicia Rashad plays as Scott’s. The duo played their roles as expected. I personally would have liked to see the former "Foxy Brown" badass and the lovable wife and mother of the Cosby Show, act in more scenes. On the contrary, with the majority of the film focused on just Scott's and Leslie's unlikely companionship, the movie evoked a clear message ..."Beauty is only skin deep."

So on a scale of 1 - 10... I give the movie a 7. The acting was ok. I enjoyed it and who doesn't like The Queen! The film is rated PG and approx. 101 minutes. Go ahead and see it!

This commercial is genius! It's Gatorade 2010 and the theme is 'EVOLVE'. This new Gatorade Recover 03 is the first recover and carbohydrate drink, consisting of muscle recovery benefits after working out. It is also an incredible thirst quencher. The commercial has a great theme, considering it's pretty much the message in today's society, which screams change and evolve. For example, in an athletic aspect Usain Bolt broke world records of both 100 m and 200 m events at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics for Jamaica. From a political aspect, that following November, President Barack Obama won the Presidential General Election against Republican John McCain. He is our first black President. So if you want to remain in the race, you have to be willing to evolve! Charles Darwin explained it the best in his evolution theories lol.

The song was written and produced by David Banner, the track sung by Kermit Quinn, member of Blackstreet R&B group.

The commercial's cast includes famous athletes such as, Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, Mia Hamm, Serena Williams, Kevin Garnett, Dwight Howard, Usain Bolt, and Peyton Manning.

The chorus' message is clear and concise,

"Education Means Emancipation" President Barack Obama

President Barack Obama delivers Commencement Address at Hampton University's 140th Annual Commencment.

As a young student of Cambria Center for the Gifted Child, in Queens, New York, I distinctively remember the the first sentence of the school's pledge. I recited it every day with my classmates, "Education is the key which unlocks the door, to guide us through life forever more..." On Sunday, May 9, 2010, I had the opportunity to witness an event so epic in not only Hampton University's history but American History.

As I hurriedly walked passed lines of family and friends of this year's graduates, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anxiety and pride. The dreams and aspirations of every student who've attended Hampton University, my alma mater, were founded here. A familiar feeling of exhiliration rushed through me while seeing proud students line up to graduate, on that Mother's Day. There were expectations of chaos and somewhat uncontrollable crowds due to this year's special speaker. To my surprise, it was quite the opposite. The lines literally fell out of the confinements of Hampton University's campus and people smoothly went through metal detectors, a symbol of the times we currently live in.

Sitting with the press in the middle of the field, I was able to see all angles of the stadium, spotting Special Agents and security personnel. There were located on the roofs, above the stage, at the gates, and most likely, in places not publicly visible. Finally, HU's famed concert choir serenaded the crowds of people, anticipating not only the graduates but the President himself.

President Obama had finally walked out on stage to speak and the crowds became ecstatic with emotion, roaring with cheers and uncontrollable clapping. President Obama began thanking the audience, especially all the mothers. He then thanked HU for allowing him to share such a special occasion. "Education means emancipation...," the phrase spoken by President Obama, which would forever ring in the ears of all Americans. He then explained that this has been a theme in American History throughout every war up to the wars we are facing now. Our economy is facing the "worst crisis since the Great Depression" and the world is still rebounding through economic crises. Education has always been necessary to "meet the challenges of the changing world." To survive such transitions, we as a people, need to change as well, with preparation and education as armors. Like the theme of President Obama's presidential campaign, change has and will always be evident.

President Obama then charged graduates to be role models for upcoming youth and lead them to break even more boundaries untouched. This is much needed, considering unemployment is "over twice as high with those without a college degree or more" in our current economy. There is hope of our economy progressing but time has shown that our nation's economy fluctuates. President Obama also noted the following:

Globally, "in 8th grade science and math... American students are ranked about 10th overall compared to top performing countries."
"African Americans are ranked behind more than 20 nations...lower than nearly every other developed country."

In Conclusion...

It is our job, as Americans, to make sure every child receives a proper education. Especially if we are willing to compete globally and be ahead of other nations in all aspects. This is crucial for not only our economy as a whole, but security as well. A great tribute was made to Dr. Dorothy Height, who was not only an American, but a pioneer who broke racial barriers in order to receive a college education. If she could break down these thresholds and continue the fight to be emancipated through education, we as Americans, some of us of color, female, male, gay or straight... no matter what is said to be a "limitation", we have the POWER to change and use education to its full potential.

The decision is yours to make a difference, whether you choose to live for self or for others..

Its entirely up to you to make such a decision. Just know that everything is connected and whatever decision you make affects someone else directly or indirectly, whether you choose to live selfishly or for humanity. So choose wisely. The next step is the path to your Destiny. You don't know the outcome so take yourself outside of the box, and realize that tomorrow is not promised. Live every day like it's your last but be sure to leave your legacy and pave the way for others to follow. Make sure you set yourself up and be smart so that you have a promising future. Nothing comes easy and most things that come easy are not worth having. Lead a path so tomorrow's leaders have a blueprint to go by if they become lost.

Recognize the three P's in your daily routine of life: Potential Power you Posess
Though it is your choice, it is your responsibility to understand the potential power you possess, to lead many astray or on the right path. Whether you know it or not, we are all connected through body, mind, and spirit. Break out of old habits the Time Is Now! Open your eyes, minds, and spirits to what is beautiful in the world around you.. Simultaneously, acknowledge the devastations, the tragedies, and the pain those are suffering. Wake up rejoice that you are able to breathe once more..There are so many who aren't granted the same opportunities. Use your blessings to help another...you will be blessed abundantly!

If you want change to occur you must first start with yourself. Take a look inside and find the confidence to change for the better. No one is perfect, everyone have flaws yet that is no excuse to have the desire to change. Change is constant and change is a sign of growth. Do not be afraid to take it by the horns and ride it out until the end! It is up to you to live everyday like it's your Death or live everyday like it's a NEW BEGINNING...REBIRTH in your own right!

You might remember Shea Davis from a wild shoot out in one of N.Y.C's subways back in 1994, "where he allegedly fired shots at police officers who had detained his friend for possession of a weapon." (http://www.myspace.com/sheadavisotf)

Although, Shea Davis, also known as Punch, was incarcerated for 6 years after that incident, that did not stop him from pursuing his love for Hip Hop. You may also recognize him from smackdvdmagazine back in 2002. He's got a mixtape out Punch: "Rush Hour Gunfire"

Shea was recently on DJ Don Demarco's radio show www.royalradio1063.com (Wednesday, April 21) saying that he's been rapping since the age of 12 - 13. Though, he's come from a rough past, Shea has managed to turn what he's been through in the roughest projects, Patterson in the South Bronx, into a positive art form encouraging youth to stay on a straight path. He keeps it real in his music and holds nothing back, exposing the grit and grime of the streets and the life of a real "G'.

A Little Historic Background of Treme:

Treme is a historic neighborhood in New Orleans, Louisiana which suffered minor to moderate damages during the recent devastation of Hurricane Katrina (www.wikipedia.com). This neighborhood is sometimes referred to as the epicenter of the modern Brass Band tradition, which is relative to concert or military bands, and African American and Creole culture. Many musicians emerged from this town such as, Alphonse Picou and Kermit Ruffins.

What Does HBO Have Anything To Do With It?:

The show, Treme, takes place about 3 months after Hurricane Katrina ravished New Orleans in 2005. It is a drama about the hardships of several characters ranging from a successful jazz musician, a bar owner, a displaced Mardi Gras Inian chief, and a rebellious DJ/ local musician. These are just a few of the intriguing characters plagued with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Treme was created by David Simon, who is the creator of 'The Wire' and 'Generation Kill', and Eric Overmeyer, writer of 'Homicide' and 'Law and Order'. What is "IT" you may ask?

IT may be how much the industry (corporate) actually controls the content of
"hip hop" music.

IT may be the level of psychological and social impact, even just one verse may have on our younger generation's minds.

IT may be the culture that has evolved, and still continuing a creative change, from the time Hip Hop was born: Bronx - late 1970's. "South, South, Bronx!" lol.

Just What If all the next albums released were created to speak positively about life, choices and consequences. This does not include those who are already doing it to an extent. Some may argue, but like Common, Lupe, Nas .. etc. You guys get the point.

Rapper Ludacris has teamed up with actor Jamie Foxx to help raise awareness of HIV and AIDS - by encouraging youngsters to discuss the disease.

The duo is taking part in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's I Know campaign, which uses social networking sites to convince African-Americans aged 18 to 24 to discuss the virus.

In one public service announcement, Ludacris says, "HIV isn't his problem or her problem. It's all of our problem. The facts are clear. African-Americans, especially young people, are being devastated by HIV and AIDS. But there is something we can all do about it. We can and must talk about HIV. So break the silence by having a conversation. Send a text. Update your status. Post this video. Talk about HIV and what we can do to prevent it."

According to the CDC, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Black/African Americans were accounted for as being infected with the AIDS Virus in all areas of the U.S. except for the West. House Passes Health Care Bill on 219-212 Vote

So our world has changed dramatically, and continues to change since from about 9 years ago dating back to 9/11/01.

Now we have the beginning of a reformed health care system in the midst of a bad economy, two wars, and history taking a turn for the worst as far as fighting racial issues in this country. Just so that you know, the health reform bill was passed yesterday in a 219-212 vote after more than a year of a tumultuous partisan debate. All 178 Republicans opposed it, as well as 34 Democrats. Where do you stand with this new bill? Are you pulling a ya or nay?

I've had this debate with many of my friends and I find that my circle is split down the middle of either supporting or opposing the bill. Keep in mind that the current health care system is far from perfect, which I don't think any system is perfect. I mean if you have Medicaid, Medicare, or another government funded health insurance, you'll find that they do not cover a lot of health costs and you may experience a lot of denials. Or if you have a private insurer, you may experience them charging you literally out of your a#@. Not to mention, the very insurance companies put into place to help those in need, are monopolizing off of the public's' money.

Some argue that this bill will not decrease the national debt and will increase government spending of tax dollars, further burdening, as you know it, "We The People". Which, in return, comes in full circle further leaving the poor even more dependent and using the government as a permanent crutch. Isn't this bill suppose to provide the middle ground for the two extremities? Creating a more affordable health insurance for everyone, while providing better health care for the majority, without affecting those who currently pays for premium insurance plans?? Do you think it's fair to impose such a burden on those making a certain income to pay for the funding of this new plan??? You make your decision. As time flies by I'm wondering why my peace of mind, stagnant waiting for a break in the silver lines that separates me from the heavens and the blessings in the sky.

I'm wondering why my break hasn't come but I know it's in formation..Faith, the basis for my rule of thumb...guiding me through the desert to find my oasis, I'm going places..

Destiny's plans not to hurt but to make me strong. Trying not to fumble my pass, I'm making it strong...BlOCKA! BLOCKA! Im shooting to the end zone!

Feeling my way but it's like I've traveled this route before. They say predestined before I was born. Nothing too far for my imagination..no I'm not gone.

Nothing is impossible, please believe my touchdown is there for me to score. But I have to endure all this anguish and pain enough to make an individual insane..but not a case just beyond what "professionals" can name..

Yet could it be my hidden desire is only fortune and fame or does my individuality naturally call for it- traveling on this track I never chose this train.

Confusion racks my brain because no other lane tunneled visioned straight to the game. Mini successes lead the way.

My lil' voice hoping it's not a trick of the trade. Everybody to the left or the right have something to say. Either proceed or turn around run the other way.

The only thing left to do but to fall on my knees and pray. No one knows the end but God knows all about my fate.

So this can't be a mistake even though I'm yearning for a break. Even when I want to quit, Destiny has a way of returning before I could blink.

Or before I could sink in the depths of an abyss. There she goes again with a rope, giving me a lift. What a trip.

Just to start the fight over again. Makes me wonder if life can just give me a hand permanently extend..

I just gotta keep moving, even when my feet are too tired to stand, because I know I won't be able to live if I've failed according to what is planned. To fail is man's universal plight but I struggle to push the thought out of my mind.

Gotta keep the loose ends tight. So many distractions in my blind eye stop wasting time!
No matter how hard a try, I stumble then get back up. It's gotta be because of my mother's prayers pointing me to the light.

I've got to stay right so easy to travel left. Sometime running out of breath..curiosity anxiety fills my chest.

Looking back at all the memories no more feelings just painted pictures freeze..

My mechanism of surviving how to move forward with ease. What is this all about an everlasting lesson got my stressing.

NO relief im seeking a tall tree..I'm getting to the top I don't give a funk about the scraped knees..I don't care about trying to please religious one's to appease.

Releasing what I've been blessed with not the influence of Satan please!...Face the Funk I may be different but I was born to lead...

Yes I've fallen but I am still here I still breathe..got the scars to prove it I know my past it ain't squeaky clean.

My desire my passion..I see it therefore I am it. Don't be stunned.. just know my Faith, the basis for my rule of thumb...guiding me through the desert to find my oasis, I'm going places..

Just hoping when I get over to that side of land I can have my berries...so to speak

the death of a heartbeat

when each string popped, I can't sing

just close my eyes and reminisce

of all the times I thought you were mine

naive of me thinking that I could believe

that you'll be different than the others it just seems...

so unreal that you can turn a 360

when you wanted me to take your word,

just take any that you've offered like a fiend

you were supposed to be the pie and I- your topping, your cream

turns out I was just the moment or your time being

baby don't lie to me, these games same song, new notes, different sheet

only now I no longer have music within me

because instead you've taken the only note and

shredded it like a damaged reed

so what was it? not pretty enough, woman enough, human enough...

I can't help but to be just me

taken for granted, I wish you can take my eyes so that you can see

the pain in my heart, my ears so you can hear the death of a heartbeat.

I AM UTTERLY DISGUSTED....A CHANGE MUST COME BUT WE ALL GOTTA PITCH IN!!

I WROTE THESE A LIL WHILE BACK, inspire by one of the most deadliest experiences I've had to endure, unfortunately, 2 summers ago.. but it basically sums up everything I have went through and you have seen in general.. I felt like these entries NEEDED TO RE-SURFACED!!!

Bullets tear through the innocent, remembering the words from the "God's Son".
Lead tearing through the air as it seperates the LIVING from the DEAD.
Burning flesh, smokey air, screams of distress, body still laying LIFELESS.
Over and over again, memories play in my mind, remembering the SENSELESS.

Thankful realizing I am blessed to escape the madness.
Thankful yet saddened because one was not too lucky, yet we stood breast to breast.
I CONFESS- elated it wasn't me, I had another chance before I'm LAYED to REST.
Disturbances so REAL, memories pumping extra beats in my chest.
So UNREAL, one minute enjoying life, the next dodging BULLETS.
People running in desperation, suddenly realizing LIFE is PRICELESS.

The panic suddenly dies to a deafening silence.
RAT TAT TAT!! There it goes again!
Look over my shoulder- dread got shot in the head...
As he falls to the ground in his own bloody mess, I wonder Y he must suffer a crime so ruthless.
SENSELESS, gun fights, there goes a son, daughter CAUGHT IN THE NECK.
Can't see the world, explore their POTENTIAL, they've already taken their last breath.

This burdens me to the fullest and had brought me to tears of distress.
This cannot be the reality we've settled to POSSESS.
My anger emits from fear of never-ending cycles needed to be suppressed.

We hold the POWER to change lives, we are responsible until our DEATH.
NO ONE will do it for us, these issues we must ADDRESS.
But who cares, WHO CARES?!?!?! WHO COULD CARE LESS!

Why do we turn our heads, look to him or her to make a MOVE NEXT?
Our motto is now change! UNITY, LOVE will mend us best.
I know it's not easy but I don't know of easy tests.
We have to come together......R.I.P. PASTENCE.....

Part II.

Aren't you sick of the violence?
No change in the tenses.
Still walking in the past, no new stride for the present.
Dealing with the strife, no hope for the future.
A few realize, building foundation will bring change sooner.

Truer--we owe it to ourselves.
We have power, grab ahold Satan's hands--let it looser.
His tight grip confuses eyes, his lying tongue ruins lives.
He has no power like the God in us, no matter how much he tries.
Fight it harder, or there will be no more you and I.

When there's an urge to destroy each other, We'll be forever lost in sight.
This is our opportunity, join together...
The outcome is worth the trials.
We will no longer by blinded by the past,
Just to move on marching towards the light.

Our pain will be our joy.
You can't have the left without the right.
No beginning without the end.
After death there is life.
This is my answer to what I've written.
A cry from all those tragic nights.
No more will we stand by--

On a recent hot summer Saturday, about a dozen youngsters sat under a shady tree rehearsing lines for an upcoming play about teens and HIV/AIDS. A misunderstanding had left them locked out of a recreation center. But the cast was determined to practice so they set up on a Berkley lawn.

As they sipped water and rehearsed scenes, Saran Day, who wrote the play a couple of years ago and is directing it, told the actors to project their voices, face the audience and let their emotions flow. But they still seemed stiff. Perhaps it was the heat. So Day made them drop their scripts.

"Ad lib," she said. "That's a key component to plays."

Then the actors became more animated, portraying students and faculty of the fictitious Crossroads High School as they grapple with the consequences of teen sex and HIV.

Having young people talk to fellow teens about the importance of HIV and AIDS

awareness is the idea behind the play titled "No One's Talking: Speak Now," which opens Saturday in the theater inside Chrysler Museum of Art.

Proceeds will help fund AIDS education and testing resources.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the rate of new HIV infections is highest among young people ages 13-29.

Based on a report released by the Virginia Department of Health earlier this year, about 21,000 Virginians have HIV or AIDS, about one out of every 370 people in the state.

Instead of having an adult lecture from a podium about the dos and don'ts of teen sex, Day - director of a Portsmouth-based advocacy group for teenagers called Youth Against Drugs and Diseases - figured it would be more effective to have informed teenagers educate peers about sexual health, the dangers of unprotected sex and the importance of knowledge about AIDS.

Courtney Greer, a rising senior at Booker T. Washington High School and the play's lead protagonist, agreed.

"It's a psychological thing because you feel like they understand you, and you understand them because you're the same age," said Greer, 17, who portrays Samaya, a teen who has been exposed to HIV after having unprotected sex with her boyfriend, Thad.

Still, parental involvement is important, said Day, a wife and mother of six in Portsmouth's Prentis Park. "Kids are having consensual sex," said Day. "That's the time to start communicating what's appropriate and what's not." She encourages parents to discuss sex with their children when they reach puberty.

But, she said, many of the students she encounters say their parents either don't discuss sex or are so uncomfortable doing so that the conversations are awkward and uninformative. Youngsters end up placing themselves and others at risk, she said.

Day, 36, illustrated that point with a story about a student who had contracted AIDS from her mother, but the mom never told the child. By the time the student discovered she had the disease, she had already been sexually active with several partners. And it's not just heterosexual students who need to know about the dangers of HIV/AIDS.

"The young [gay] guys are already shunned so they don't like to talk about it," Day said. "And I know girls who are lesbian who think they can't get it." Her play depicts realistic teen situations so that the message hits home.

"It gets them thinking, 'It can happen to me,' and to pay attention," said 18-year-old Dominic Meece. He plays Kado, a hybrid of himself and a friend to Thad, the leading male who has AIDS.

Milvene Thompson, who plays Thad's grandmother, said education and smart sexual behaviors can limit the disease's spread.

Thompson, a mother of three and a nurse's assistant, said she always talked to her kids about sex and diseases as they were growing up.

"When you get a sexual partner, you should know their sexual history, if they've had a check up, if they've had an HIV test," said the Cavalier Manor resident. "You need condoms or something to protect yourself, although the best way is to abstain."

Brittany Wilhelm had always dreamed of becoming a supermodel, but her height cut that dream short.

That was until Saturday, when the 5-foot, 4-inch student from Charlotte, N.C., lined up with hundreds of other women at The Gallery at Military Circle hoping to become "America's Next Top Model." For the first time in 13 seasons , the hit reality TV show lowered its height requirement, inviting women 5 feet, 7 inches tall or shorter to audition.

The response was tremendous, drawing the largest turnout of any casting call so far, said Chris Wolf , director of creative services and programs for The CW Television Network, which hosts the show.

"It's the biggest line we've had," Wolf said, as he took a break from yelling out directions on an air horn outside the mall. More than 1,000 applications were downloaded for the tryout here, he said.

The line of hundreds had already snaked around the outside of the building by the time the auditions began at noon, with women waiting as long as four hours in stiletto shoes, fitted jeans and miniskirts.

Despite standing for nearly four hours in three-inch heels, Tiannah Bruce, 23, said her feet were her last concern.

"I'm mostly excited, and I have a lot of anxiety," said Bruce, of Norfolk, who works as a digital technician at a local news station.

Lowering the height requirement is a great move for the fashion industry, which has received a lot of criticism for promoting unhealthy body images, Bruce added.

"This represents more young women who want to be models," she said.

Wilhelm, 20, a student at Johnson & Wales University in North Carolina, started driving at 2 a.m. in order to reach the tryout in time. When she finally made it to the front of the line around 12:30 p.m., a cameraman directed her to show off her best cat walk and then record a message for supermodel Tyra Banks , the show's creator and executive producer .

"I'm spunky and energetic ... and I have a lot of class," Wilhelm told Banks, before breaking into a cheer she choreographed for the audition.

I'm "your next top model," she cheered, "who can't be stopped!"

Wilhelm's tape and application package, along with those of the other women, will travel to California and be reviewed by the "Top Model" producers, Wolf said.

The show is scheduled to film in the spring or summer and air this fall, he said. The winner will receive a modeling contract and other prizes.

Even if she doesn't make the cut, Wilhelm said, she was happy to have had the chance to try.

"I have always had a really big passion for modeling; my mom was a model," she said. "But I was always told I was too short, I couldn't do it, it was a waste of my time to try. And now I'm ready to prove everyone wrong."
